Soil Fertility and Fertilizer

In this lecture we will discuss:


• Introduction

  • the concenpts of "Soil fertility" vs. "Soil Productivity"
  • the nutritional needs of plants,

• Soil-Plant Relationships*,

  • the concepts of "Soil availability"
  • "Intenstity" vs. "Capacity",
  • soil fractions and mineralogy in relation with Available Pool

• Nitrogen in soil and plant*
• Phosphorus in soil and plant,
• Potassium in soil and plant,
• Calcium, magnesium, sulfure and micronutrients in soil and plant,
• the use of fertilizers to ensure proper plant nutrition, high yield and high quality under sustainable conditions

*the last chapter will also be discussed and experienced in the lab, 

 

 

Prerequisites: 

Principles of Soil Science

Grading Policy: 

Questions will be asked on the preceding lectures in a written test which lasts  5-10 min (open book), 

the tests are noted, and an average note is calculated;

a non excused absence at each test = 0
The final note = average note of the written exams (2.0) plus midterm exam (4.0) plus  final exam note (8.0) plus Lab. note (6.0)

Additional note (up to 2.0) is considered for class activity and reports received
The credit point is given when the final note is >= 10.0
